Xylometazoline is an alpha-sympathomimetic agent belonging to the imidazoline class.
After nasal application, it causes rapid and prolonged vasoconstriction of the nasal mucosa, leading to a reduction in blood flow and congestion.
The result is a sensation of reduced obstruction and improved nasal ventilation. Sinus drainage is also possible.
The risk of rebound congestion and nasal irritation is limited thanks to a prolonged action requiring fewer applications.
Xylometozoline has no effect on ciliary clearance.
