The Olive Tree (Olea europaea) is a tree with cylindrical branches, elongated leaves and ovoid fruits. It grows around the Mediterranean, in rocky and dry soils. At the time of Homer, the cultivation of the Olive Tree was widespread throughout Greece; it is said to have been introduced into Italy in the 7th century BC. Under the Roman Empire, it was practised throughout the Mediterranean basin.
