Specific: the main cause of our body's ageing process and cell destruction is the excessive production of free radicals. Free radicals are aggressive, negatively charged oxygen molecules that destroy stable cell structures. The skin, cardiovascular system, eyes, liver and immune system are the main targets of attack. As we age, our bodies find it increasingly difficult to defend themselves against free radicals and regenerate their cells. Our bodies also have to defend themselves against many other factors that increase oxidative overload: poor diet, over-consumption of fats, smoking, sunlight, excessive exercise, stress, pollution and disease. Recent studies have shown that taking natural antioxidants such as flavonoids, anthocyanins and oligomeric proanthocyanidins significantly neutralises these degenerative effects.

A study in 18 countries assessed the mortality figures for men aged between 55 and 65. French men reached the highest age, despite having the highest intake of saturated fats (milk, cheese) and the most smokers. Other studies have shown a significant relationship between wine consumption and mortality. High consumption of wine reduces mortality from heart and blood vessel disease.

Red wine, and more specifically the seeds and skins of black grapes, are very rich in antioxidants. Anthocyanins are the colouring substances present in the skin, flavonoids strengthen the structure of the skin and polyphenols, in particular resveratrol, protect the grapes against viruses and mould. Tannins and proanthocyanidins (OPCs) preserve the pulp.

OPCs protect joints and organs against ageing and infections by reducing the formation of harmful leukotrienes and the synthesis of prostaglandins II.
