Melissa officinalis has calming, relaxing and slightly hypnotic properties thanks to its essential oil, which is rich in terpenoids, pinene, limonene, carryophyllene, linalool, nerol, farnesol, citral and citronellal.

Lemon balm is a phytotranquiliser that acts on the limbic system. The plant is used in cases of nervous or emotional tension, palpitations and mild depression. Lemon balm revitalises the nervous system and improves cognitive functions.

Like the essential oil, the flavonoids (apigenin and luteolin), triterpenic acids (ursolic and oleanolic acid), catechol tannins and bitter substances have digestive, antispasmodic, antiemetic, carminative and aperitive properties. Lemon balm reduces gastric cramps, colic, nausea, vomiting and irritable bowel syndrome. Thanks to its antispasmodic effect on the uterus, lemon balm can ease menstrual pain.

Lemon balm contains anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties thanks to the presence of catechol tannins and phenolic acids.

In vitro studies and studies on rats and mice show that Melissa officinalis has neuroprotective properties (Hassanzadeh et al. 2011, Bayat et al. 2012, Martins et al. 2012), anxiolytic and antidepressant properties (Taiwo et al. 2012) and reduces physiological stress (Feliú-Hemmelmann et al. 2013).

Clinical studies have noted an increase in cognitive performance and a calmer state of mind (Kennedy et al. 2003 and 2004) as well as a reduction in anxiety and an improvement in insomnia (Case et al. 2011). In a study of Alzheimer's patients, lemon balm improved cognitive function, clinical evaluation and agitation (Akhondzadeh et al. 2003).
