COLOSTRUM

first secretion from the mammary glands after giving birth.

  • changes to ordinary milk after 3 days

  • protects the newborn against infections until its immune system has developed

  • promotes the immune development of the infant's intestinal flora thanks to its high gel protein content

Composition:

  • resembles blood serum.

  • contains a small amount of red blood cells and a large amount of white blood cells.

high content of:

- Ig: IgG, IgM, IgA -7%- (1% milk).

- Copper and iron.

- Oligosaccharides.

- Growth factors.

- Antimicrobial substances.

- Cytokines, peptides, bio-active substances.

- Lipids, proteins.

- Tumor Necrosis Factor.

- Lactoferrin, lactoalbumin, casein.

LACTOFERRIN or red protein is an iron glycoprotein belonging to the transferrin family.

Biological properties of lactoferrin****:

Important substance in the immune system in mucous membranes, colostrum and milk. Released into the serum by neutrophils in the event of infection, inflammation, tumours or excess iron. If not present in the neutrophil, it loses its bactericidal capacity and increases the risk of infection. Inhibition due to malnutrition, weakness, liver failure, iron saturation, diabetes.

Properties:

  • Immune modulation

- Maturation of leukocytes.

- Cell differentiation.

- Inhibits cytokine reaction.

- Prevents the formation of peroxide radicals and the release of H2 by phagocytes.

- Regulates iron availability.

captures the iron needed for bacterial growth, preventing mammary infections outside the lactation period.

  • stimulates a series of reactions which induce the immune response.

  • destabilises the outer membrane wall of bacteria: destruction or enzymatic degradation.

  • acts with other immune factors present in secretions:

- lysosomes, IgG, IgA,

- antimicrobial peptides

  • enhances the activity of antimicrobial substances: B-lactams and azole fungicides.

  • linked to the production of cytokines and Tumor Necrosis Factor.

Antitumour:

  • prevents the formation of cancerous lesions in intestinal tumours in rats.

  • increases the activity of 'Natural Killer' cells in spleen tumours.

  • preventive activity against cancer in animals: tumours of the bladder, oesophagus and lungs.

Other actions of lactoferrin

  • inhibits viral infection in cases of: HIV, Hepatitis C, Cytomegalovirus and Haemophilus influenzae.

  • improves Tricophitón Mentagrophites dermatological infections.

  • increases phagocytosis.

  • improves lymphocyte proportion.

  • improves intestinal flora via bifidobacteria.

  • improves the symptoms of Tinea Pedis.

INTESTINAL FLORA

Intrauterine life is sterile. Contamination occurs during delivery, with rapid colonisation of the digestive system. After 2 to 5 days, bifidobacteria are present in the stools.

The pH of the infant lactic deposit is 5-5.5.

The pH of the bottle's lactic deposit is 7, due to the change in putrefaction flora.

More than 40% of stool weight is made up of micro-organisms (400 species). The intestinal flora is very dynamic and constantly renews itself (every 2 days).

The stomach on an empty stomach is virtually sterile - 1000 micro-organisms per ml, pH<3. The initial part of the small intestine: 104 micro-organisms/ml: Streptococci, Lactobacillus and some Bifidobacterium.

The distal part of the small intestine: 107 micro-organisms/ml: varied flora. In the colon, the flora is identical to that in the stools: 90% are anaerobic micro-organisms.

Changes in the intestinal flora occur as a result of stomach dysfunction, poor diet, intestinal peristalsis, intestinal stricture or diverticulum, enteritis: Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, scleroderma, antibiotics, x-ray irradiation of the abdominal area, fistulas, gastric and intestinal colic, cirrhosis of the liver, immune system disorders, nervous tension, psychological (stress, depression), tumours, medication.

Function of the intestine:

absorption of water and electrolytes

  • stool propulsion

  • stool collection and evacuation

- intestinal mucosa:

  • protection against damage

  • stool sliding

  • protection against bacterial activity and acids

  • delivery of energy by the bacteria responsible for putrefaction and fermentation

- fermentation flora

  • feeds on carbohydrates

  • produces lactic acid, acetate, formic acid, ethyl acid and gases (methane, co2, oh)

- putrefaction flora

  • feeds on proteins

  • produces sulphate hydroxide (methylene, ethylene), mercaptans, ammonia, indol, escatol

PROBIOTICS

Microbial supplements favour the host's intestinal flora: Lactobacillus acisophyllus, -casei, Bifidobacterium bifidi, -adolescents, Bifidobacterium longum, Sreptococcus salivarius, -thermophyllus.

Effects of probiotica :

  • prevents the colonisation of pathogenic germs.

  • produces antimicrobial substances.

  • promotes weight gain.

  • produces group B vitamins, vitamin K, etc

  • improves peristalsis and flora balance.

  • slows cell ageing.

  • improves digestion.

PREBIOTICS

Non-digestible food supplements with a favourable effect on the intestinal flora. They are good for the host and provide fermentation food for the flora: inulin, oligofructose, pectin, hemicellulose, mucilage.

Source of starch reserves in 36,000 plant species: chicory root 60%; marshmallow 50%; artichoke; leek; asparagus; garlic; onion

Hydrolysis with acids or inulinase gives fructose.

Characteristics

  • softening effect (cfr. fructose chain length).

  • resists enzymatic breakdown,

  • acts as a dietary fibre,

  • replaces fats and sugars

- oligofructose contains 7 fructose chains.

- sweet taste (fluid or powder).

- dietary fibre for bifidus

- reduces clostridium and bacteria

- ferments in the flora to acetate 55%, lactic acid 25%, propionic acid 10%, butyrate 5%.

- creates a favourable pH, stimulates fermentation and inhibits pathogenic germs

- excreted as gas 10% and faeces 40%.

Effect of inulin and oligofructose

- substitution of sugars and fats

- increases stool volume

- stimulates intestinal peristalsis

- promotes the development of good intestinal flora (fermentation)

- lowers cholesterol and triglycerides

- increases HDLl and reduces LDL

- lowers PH in the colon

- favourable influence on insulin and glucagon

- favourably influences the production of vit. B and K

- improves the mineral balance between calcium, iron and magnesium

β****-glucans

β-glucans are D-glucose polysaccharides with β-linkages. They are found mainly in plant cellulose, cereal bran, the cell walls of baker's yeast, certain fungi and bacteria and are active on the immune system.

Properties:

  • immunomodulating: prevention and treatment of viral, bacterial, fungal or parasitic infections (respiratory, digestive, skin, etc.)

  • cholesterol-lowering

  • antioxidant

  • anti-tumour (anti-mutagenic, antioxidant)

  • protects against chemotherapy and X-ray

  • other: hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, helps lower blood pressure and blood sugar, haematopoietic, anticoagulant

Effect on the immune system

stimulates the production of macrophages and their phagocytic activity

- activation of NK cells

- stimulation of monocytes and neutrophils

- increased mobilisation of immune cells in affected areas

- activation of T helper and cytotoxic T cells

- activation of leukocytes because they release cytokines:

- IL-1: activation of lymphocytes

- IL-2: proliferation of T cells, proliferation and differentiation of B cells

- IL-4: activation of B lymphocytes and pluripotent haematopoietic cells

- IL-8 or neutrophil chemotactic factor

- IFN g: antiviral and anti-tumour effect

  • restoration of the Th-1 / Th-2 balance
  • weakness, malnutrition
