Curcuma longa (Turmeric) is choleretic through its curcuminoids and cholagogue through its essential oil. By increasing cholesterol secretion by the bile, Turmeric lowers cholesterol levels. Lipid peroxidation and, consequently, the sedimentation of cholesterol plaques are prevented. The antithrombotic effect slows down abnormal coagulation by stopping the formation of thromboxane A2.
Curcumin protects the liver against toxic substances. The combination of essential oil and curcumin produces an aperitif, stomachic, digestive, carminative and spasmolytic effect. Thanks to curcumin, the plant also has an anti-inflammatory effect that can be compared to that of phenylbutazone, indomethacin or hydrocortisone. Curcumin is a stronger scavenger of free radicals than vitamin E, making it a good antioxidant.
Curcuminoids also help to prevent Alzheimer's disease thanks to their anti-inflammatory effect. Oxidative damage is limited and lipid peroxidation and the formation of amyloid plaques in the brain are halted. Turmeric prevents genetic mutation, often caused by chemical products, increases detoxification of carcinogenic and mutagenic substances by the liver and inhibits the promotion and progression phases of carcinogenesis. Finally, Turmeric protects against the complications of diabetes by lowering blood lipids and through its antioxidant properties.
Zingiber officinalis (Ginger) strengthens the stomach by increasing the secretion of gastric juice and reinforces and protects the stomach mucosa through zingiberene, 6-gingerol, 6-shogaol and zingiberone. Ginger has an anti-vomiting effect through its peripheral action: it increases normal peristalsis, increases the tone of the gastrointestinal musculature and absorbs toxins and acids, thanks to 6-, 8- and 10-gingerols, shogaols and zingerone, among others. The essential oil has an anti-inflammatory effect on the intestines by absorbing toxins and acids in the intestines. Ginger improves digestion and appetite, and lowers gas thanks to zingiberene. 6-shogaol has a spasmolytic effect. Ginger also increases saliva secretion with more amylase and mucopolysaccharides. Thanks to 6- and 10-shogaol, Ginger has a choleretic and cholagogue effect. The liver is protected and its function improved by 8-gingerol, 7- and 8-shogaol and zingiberol.
Ginger is known for its vasodilating effect thanks to zingerone. Its root stimulates blood circulation, especially in the skin, and myocardial function. The strength of contractions is stimulated while the heartbeat is lowered thanks to 6-, 8- and 10-gingerols and 6-shogaol.
Finally, Ginger has an anti-inflammatory effect on the joints: it reduces the production of prostaglandin type 2 substances that mediate inflammation; inhibits the synthesis of thromboxane; reduces the 'leaky gut syndrome', which means that fewer macromolecules are able to penetrate the intestinal mucosa to take on an antigenic function that forms autoimmune substances that attack cartilage; and finally, reduces the breakdown of cartilage by MMPs (matrix metalloproteinases).)
Ginger therefore has a sedative and protective effect on cartilage.
