Silymax has three plant extracts whose use on levers and gallbladders is well documented: mariadistel, artisjok and kurkuma. Mariadistel (Silybum marianum) is a plant from the Middelands Zeegebied. Silymarin is extracted from the leaves and is a group of flavonoids with antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties. Er zijn drie (structurele) isomeren: silybine, silydianine en silychristine, die samen silymarine genoemd worden. The anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties ensure that these compounds have a beneficial effect (1-4). Onder de mechanismen die deze eigenschappen verklaren, is er de modulatie van de cytokineproductie (TNF-alpha, interferon gamma en interleukine-2), afhangend van de transcriptiefactor, de NF-kappa-B. Silymarine optimises the doorstroming of gal to galblaas (5).

Artisjok (Cynara scolymus) is even more important as a component in weight-loss formulations. Het belangrijkste bestanddeel in artisjok is cynarine, dat vooral in de bladeren gevonden wordt. Cynarine is een stof die zowel de productie als de afbraak van gal door de lever bevordert (6, 7). Verder werkt het hepatoprotectief door ondersteuning van de regeneratie van levercellen en door een antioxidatief effet tegen toxines. Kurkuma is regarded as a krachtige antioxidant. The wortelstok contains a mixture of chilli, curcumin (diferuloylmethaan) and the herbal oils tumeron, atlanton and zingiberon. In traditionele geneeskunde wordt geelwortel beschouwd als een leverbeschermend middel door zijn uitgesproken antioxidatieve en anti-inflammatoire eigenschappen (8, 9). In Silymax a specific kurkuma extract (Curcuma longa) has been selected which contains 95% curcuminoids. Biokurkuma is a complex of bioactive curcuminoids derived from the etheric oil of Curcuma longa, where the opneembaarheid of kurkumine with a zeven factor toeneemt en deze stof tot drie maal langer in het lichaam aanwezig blijft. In addition to these two plant extracts, Silymax also contains choline, which is important for the development of normal leavening. Choline is an essential ingredient for fish. Choline is combined with fosfatidylcholine, which is essential to prevent the build-up of fat and cholesterol in the liver. Wetenschappelijk onderzoek heeft een duidelijke link aangetoond tussen een vervette lever en een tekort aan choline (10,11).
