Pre-operative surgical hand disinfection

• Wet hands and forearms and wash with undiluted solution for 1 minute
• Brush nails with a nail brush
• Rinse well and wash again with the solution for 2 minutes
• Rinse well and dry

Hygienic hand disinfection

• Wet hands and forearms and wash with undiluted solution for 1 minute
• Rinse well and dry

Pre-operative body hygiene for the patient

• Wash the whole body with 25 ml of solution (about 2 tablespoons) starting with the face and continuing downwards. Pay particular attention to the skin around the nose, armpits, navel, groin folds and perineum
• Rinse the body and repeat with 25 ml of solution, this time starting with the hair (head). Rinse hair and body thoroughly
• Dry with a clean towel and put on freshly laundered linen
• Bedridden patients can be washed with Hibiscrub using standard bed-bath methods
• Disinfection of the operating field is carried out in the operating theatre in the conventional way

Post-operative patient hygiene

• Wash the whole body according to the method described for pre-operative hygiene, with the exception of the surgical wound
