Administration of folic acid increases folate status in women. Low folate status in pregnant women increases the risk of neural tube defects in the developing foetus. A neural tube defect is a congenital disorder caused by abnormal formation of the central nervous system (e.g. spina bifida).folic acid plays a role in the process of cell division and as such contributes to the growth of maternal tissues during pregnancy. Folic acid also contributes to normal blood formation. Folic acid contributes to the increase in red blood cell mass, the formation of the placenta and the growth of the foetus, uterus and breasts during pregnancy.
Folic acid contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system and to normal psychological functions such as concentration, learning, memory, reasoning and resistance to stress. Folic acid also helps to reduce fatigue. Folic acid intake may be lower in the elderly, for example due to reduced appetite.
Folic acid contributes to the normal metabolism of homocysteine. Homocysteine is an amino acid produced by the body which is normally converted into methionine, an essential amino acid and building block of proteins. The folate-dependent production of methionine from homocysteine is achieved by transferring a methyl group from 5-methyltetrahydrofolate to vitamin B12 and then to homocysteine to form methionine.

1 tablet per day with water, at mealtimes All women who wish to have a baby are advised to take 0.4 mg of folic acid per day at least one month before conception and up to three months after conception in order to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. There are other risk factors for the development of neural tube defects, so the administration of folic acid cannot rule them out entirely.
