HMB or hydroxymethylbutyrate is a metabolite or breakdown product of leucine (essential amino acid) produced by the body (endogenous). Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, which in turn are the building blocks of muscles. We can also obtain HMB from our food (for example, from citrus fruit, avocado, cauliflower and catfish). To achieve an active dose of 3g HMB per day, we would need to absorb 600g of high-quality protein or 60g of leucine. This is virtually impossible in our diet, so an HMB supplement may be advisable.

It has been shown that an additional intake of HMB reduces the breakdown of muscle proteins (anti-catabolic effect) and promotes the development of muscle mass (anabolic effect). It also reduces muscle damage and promotes faster muscle recovery after extreme exercise. An additional intake of HMB can result in an increase in lean body mass and have a positive effect on muscle strength.
