When Bernagie-olie tot 24% gammalinoleenzuur (GLA) bevat, is dit de rijkste plantaardige bron van GLA. Bernagie-olie contains ongeveer 34% linoleenzuur en daarnaast nog verzadigde en enkelvoudigde onverzadigde vetzuren. Many cells synthesise GLA from linoleic acid, a metabolic component of the synthesis of dihomogammalinoleic acid and arachidonic acid. Kinderen, oudere mensen, spanningen, hypothyroïdie, obesitas, tekorten aan Bvitaminen, zink... zijn factoren die de synthese van GLA inhiberen.
