Doordat Bernagie-olie tot 24% gammalinoleenzuur (GLA) bevat, is dit de rijkste plantaardige bron van GLA. Bernagie-olie bevat ook ongeveer 34% linoleenzuur en daarnaast nog verzadigde en enkelvoudig onverzadigde vetzuren. Gezonde cellen synthetiseren GLA vanuit linolzuur, een metabole tussenstof in de synthese van dihomogammalinoleenzuur en arachidonzuur. Kinderen, oudere mensen, spanningen, hypothyroïdie, obesitas, tekorten aan Bvitaminen, zink... zijn factoren die de synthese van GLA inhiberen.
